A MacBook can show a USB-C connection while still charging slowly. The connector shape is only the starting point: speed depends on the laptop model, charger wattage, cable capability, battery state, temperature, and workload.
Start with the charger
The charger is often the limit. A MacBook Air may be comfortable with a moderate USB-C Power Delivery charger, while a MacBook Pro under sustained work needs more headroom. A charger’s headline wattage may be shared across ports, so plugging in a phone can reduce laptop output. Check the current port-allocation table.
Battery and workload
Charging is not equally fast from zero to full. The Mac may reduce the rate near full to protect battery longevity, and Optimized Battery Charging can pause based on your routine. Video exports, many tabs, or an external display consume power while the adapter supplies it, so the battery may rise slowly or stay level. Heat can also reduce charging. Try a light workload, clear vents, or close the lid.
Cable checks
USB-C cables have different power ratings. A 60W cable suits many Air setups; a 100W-class cable adds headroom for larger chargers. A 240W label is not an automatic speed upgrade, and wattage says nothing by itself about data or video. Inspect both connectors, remove debris safely, and try a known-good cable. Simple test
- Connect the charger directly, without a hub.
- Use a cable with a stated power rating.
- Disconnect other devices and wait several minutes.
- Check the battery menu or System Information for reported adapter wattage.
If the direct test remains unexpectedly slow, compare with the adapter recommended for your model and inspect for damaged ports or cables. Do not confuse a higher-rated cable with a higher-rated charger: the whole setup negotiates only what the device supports.
