MacBook Pro 14 charging kit: MagSafe vs USB-C vs 100W GaN
Short answer: For daily desk use, pair a MagSafe 3 cable with a 96W or 100W brick. For one cable that also charges phones and tablets, use a labeled 100W USB-C cable with the same brick. You do not need a hub to charge.

What you are actually choosing
MagSafe is a connector. USB-C is also a connector. 100W GaN is a charger. You pick a cable type and a charger wattage. You are not picking three competing products.
- MagSafe 3 cable: USB-C on the brick end, magnetic MagSafe 3 on the laptop. Breakaway safety. Frees Thunderbolt ports.
- USB-C cable: Same brick, plugs into any Thunderbolt port. One cable for MacBook, phone, and tablet.
- 96W or 100W brick: Enough for fast charge on Pro 14. A 65W brick works but is slower.

Complete the setup
1. MagSafe path
Apple MagSafe 3 cable (2 m)
Magnetic breakaway for desk use. Not a USB-C cable.
2. Brick
Apple 96W USB-C
Apple’s Pro 14 fast-charge recommendation. Cable sold separately.
3. Smaller GaN brick
Anker 736 100W GaN
Same watt class in a travel-friendly body. Works with MagSafe or USB-C cables.
4. USB-C path
Anker 333 USB-C 100W
Labeled 100W USB-C cable. Not MagSafe. Best when one cable charges everything.
Buy MagSafe if
- The laptop lives on a desk and people walk past the cable
- You want Thunderbolt ports free for docks and drives
- You already have a 67W+ USB-C brick
Buy USB-C if
- You want one cable for MacBook, iPhone, and iPad
- You travel light and already own a 100W GaN brick
- You charge through a Thunderbolt dock that already passes enough watts
Skip
- A 140W brick unless you also own a 16-inch MacBook Pro
- Calling any Anker USB-C cable “MagSafe”
- A hub just to charge. Charge direct for full wattage
Common questions
Is MagSafe faster than USB-C? No. Speed follows charger wattage and cable rating. MagSafe is a connector choice.
Is 65W enough for Pro 14? It charges. 96W or 100W is the fast-charge class Apple points at for this size.
Can I use Anker GaN with MagSafe? Yes. MagSafe cables take USB-C power from the brick end.
